Tubbs Jones Announces Kim Bondy as Recipient of 2006 CBCF George Thomas "Mickey" Leland Award
WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones is pleased to announce that this year's winner of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's (CBCF) George Thomas "Mickey" Leland Award is Kim Bondy, Vice President at CNN/U.S. and senior executive producer in charge of the network's Instant Specials. Ms. Bondy will be presented with her award during the 2006 CBCF Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) Awards Dinner which will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at the Washington Convention Center.
"I am pleased to join my CBC colleagues in saluting Kim Bondy as this year's recipient of the George Thomas 'Mickey' Leland award," said Rep. Tubbs Jones. "Kim Bondy, along with CNN American Morning co-host Soledad O'Brien's sincere and in-depth coverage of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina along the U.S. Gulf Coast, brought the harsh reality of this event into our living rooms with humanity and compassion. She is truly deserving of this award."
Kim Bondy has a long and distinguished career as a journalist. Along with her coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, she has covered the London bombings and the death of Pope John Paul II. She was instrumental in the network's Emmy award-winning coverage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the ensuing war on terrorism. Before joining CNN, Bondy was with NBC News where she held executive and senior producing positions. She was a major force on the NBC Today show serving as both executive producer of Weekend Today and news director of the weekday Today program.
The George Thomas "Mickey" Leland Humanitarian/Religious award was established by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation in honor of the distinguished late Representative from the 18th District of Texas and member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Throughout his life he demonstrated tremendous compassion for those in need, and was an inspiration for others to work toward the goals of equality and justice for all. This award is presented to a person displaying exceptional compassion and great commitment to championing the causes of the poor, underprivileged and the oppressed.
The Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) is considered to be the premier African American conference on policy issues. The ALC provides the platform for the 43 African American Members of Congress to share the progress of their work on legislative items and also allows for the exchange of ideas correlated to policy issues that are of critical concern to their constituents.
