NEW YORK, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- To commemorate their 60th Anniversary, Lowe's, the home improvement experts, teams up with the Historic Salisbury Foundation and The History Channel to aid in the renovation of a classic Queen Anne Victorian in Salisbury, North Carolina. The project is part of the Historic Salisbury Foundation's Neighborhood Revitalization Program.

In this special, host Steve Thomas looks at what it takes to rebuild an American icon, only on SAVE OUR HISTORY: VICTORIAN REBORN, premiering Saturday, September 23rd at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The History Channel.

The house, known in Salisbury as the McCubbins McCanless house, was built on spec in 1891 on land that cost just a dollar. The two-story, 3,000 sq. ft. home was designed by one of the Victorian era's most noted and prolific architects, George Barber. But over a century of weather and wear has taken its toll on this once-magnificent home.

Like many Southern cities in the 1950's and 1960's, Salisbury experienced both job losses and shifting housing patterns that led to a decline in its downtown neighborhoods. Like many of the city's grand old homes, the McCubbins McCanless house was broken up into apartments. Over time it was allowed to deteriorate, and was ultimately abandoned after a failed renovation attempt in the mid-1990's.

But with design drawings from local architect Gray Stout, and the commitment of local contractors and craftsmen, the house undergoes an eight- month restoration. The goal -- modernize and update wherever possible, while preserving the home's true Victorian character and as much of the original materials as possible.

In SAVE OUR HISTORY: VICTORIAN REBORN, host Steve Thomas documents the revival efforts covering every facet of the home -- from the foundation, plumbing, electrical, and landscaping to the masonry work on the four chimneys. The most impressive, and perhaps most challenging, aspect of the project is the reconstruction of the second-story front porch with shingled gables, ornate turned post and solid brackets with intricate sunburst designs.

SAVE OUR HISTORY: VICTORIAN REBORN is produced for The History Channel by HTV Productions - Virginia Kuppek, Executive Producer and Doc Jarden, Producer. Executive Producers for The History Channel are Susan Werbe and Libby O'Connell.
