America's Clean Hands Report Card - Can't Rise Above 'C' Level

The increased prevalence of contagious skin infections, the threat of pandemic flu and the upcoming cold season prompted The Soap and Detergent Association to issue its second Clean Hands Report Card, giving America a "C- minus," a downgrade from 2004, when the country received a "C."

Among the findings of S-D-A's 2006 National Cleaning Survey:

* 68 percent of respondents don't wash their hands long enough to effectively remove germs and dislodge dirt. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and S-D-A recommend washing with soap for at least 20 seconds.

* 36 percent surveyed seldom or never wash their hands after coughing or sneezing. One of the most common ways people catch colds is by rubbing their nose or eyes after touching someone or something contaminated with the cold virus.

* 31 percent don't always wash before eating lunch. That means germs that come from money, door handles and the lunch counter could attract more bugs than just ants to the picnic.

Who Cares Who Wears The Pants?

This is National Singles Week, and Match.com conducted a new survey of 15- hundred single Americans to get to the bottom of the age-old question: When it comes to love, are men and women really that far apart? And who really does wear the pants? This latest research shows that contrary to popular belief, the sexes understand each other better than ever and that traditional dating challenges are breaking down.

According to survey results, today's single Americans place a stronger emphasis on equality and teamwork in their relationships, and they want their intellectual and financial equals. Key findings include:

- 86 percent of both men and women say they would rather have equality
than wear the pants in their relationship.

- 76 percent of women and 71 percent of men are looking for someone of
equal intelligence.

- Nearly 60 percent of men and 40 percent of women say income doesn't
matter when looking for love.

Are Americans Right About Their Constitutional Rights?

Most Americans can correctly identify most of the basic individual rights contained in the U-S Constitution and Bill of Rights, according to a new survey conducted by the legal Web site FindLaw.com. But Americans also have some mistaken beliefs when it comes to constitutional rights. The national survey was conducted in honor of Constitution Day, the annual celebration that marks the signing of the U-S Constitution in 1787.

More than eight out of ten Americans can correctly identify that freedom of speech, freedom of the press, right to free exercise of religion, right to a fair and speedy jury trial in criminal cases and the right to peaceably assemble are rights explicitly granted by the Constitution and its amendments.

However, the survey found that many Americans identified certain rights as being explicitly granted by the Constitution and its amendments when, in fact, they are not. For example, 78 percent of Americans believe that the right to vote is guaranteed by the Constitution. Although the Constitution and its amendments contain provisions for the direct election of members of Congress and protections against voting discrimination, there is no explicit or all- encompassing constitutional right to vote.
