TLC Documents Child Victims of September 11 at a Special Summer Camp in CAMP 9/11: CHILDREN OF HOPE
SILVER SPRING, Md., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- TLC today announced the world premiere of a two-hour documentary CAMP 9/11: CHILDREN OF HOPE on Sunday August 20, at 8 PM ET/PT. CAMP 9/11 documents the experiences of seven children, ranging from eleven to nineteen years of age, who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001, while they attend a week long summer camp in Doxbury, Massachusetts. The film provides the first in-depth depiction of how children coped with the events of that day.
Held annually, Crossroads 4Kids' Camp 9/11 began in 2002 and was designed to help children cope and give them support from peers who have had similar life experiences. Camp director, Angel Martinez, a counselor for Outward Bound for several years, and a New York City native, felt compelled to lead Camp 9/11. "Five years after 9/11, the kids are still dealing with a lot of issues," explains Martinez. "The goal of the camp is to help kids through difficult situations. So we planned activities that will challenge the kids." Camp 9/11 encourages children who were virtual strangers before September 11 to let their guards down and learn to trust one another through various team building exercises. The camp pushes the children to reach their fullest mental and physical potential. Camp 9/11 currently houses twenty-four children each year.
"This emotional documentary shows the tremendous impact of September 11th through the eyes of children," said David Abraham, executive vice president and general manager of TLC. "It is an eye-opening perspective on family, loss and the still-devastating consequences of terrorism."
Throughout the emotionally-charged film, viewers witness the way the children reacted to the reality that their loved ones were never going to return home again and how they have helped each other heal. Dr. Marylene Cloitre, expert in child trauma and counselor to hundreds of children affected by 9/11, offers her insight throughout the film.
Some of the children profiled in CAMP 9/11: CHILDREN OF HOPE include:
* Fifteen-year-old Taniya Grayson who lost her grandfather in the attacks
on the Pentagon.
* Eleven-year-old Kyler Lake who lost his dad, a New York City
firefighter, in the attacks on the World Trade Center.
* Eight-year-old Taylor McCarthy, whose mother was trapped in the World
Trade Center, but escaped alive.
* Nineteen-year-old Sarah Wainio, whose sister, Elizabeth, perished on
Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Elizabeth Wainio worked for Discovery
Communications in the Discovery Commerce division.
