Artists From Around the World Gather in Lower Manhattan This September to Discuss the Role of Art in Rebuilding
Lower Manhattan Cultural Council hosts the second international summit of artists, architects, poets, writers, performers, filmmakers, and musicians, to consider the role of art and culture after crisis in cities across the globe.
NEW YORK, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- WHAT: What Comes After: Cities, Art and Recovery. A gathering of more than 20 artists and cultural leaders from Algeria, Bosnia, Egypt, Iraq, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Macedonia, Mexico, Netherlands, Rwanda, Serbia, South Africa, Vietnam, and the United States in concerts, public discussions, art exhibitions, performances, film screenings and a public art competition.
WHO: A significant and diverse collective including Egyptian filmmaker, Yousry Nasrallah, Rwandan activist and writer, Yolande Mukagasana, Indonesian performance artist, Arahmaiani, Mexican architect, Raul Cardenas Osuna, South African journalist and poet, Antjie Krog, New Orleans jazz trumpeter, Kermit Ruffins, and Baghdad filmmaker Oday Rasheed, and many others.
WHEN: September 14 - 17, 2006
WHY: Amid chaos and disaster, art often spurs a community to heal. This summit looks at art as the human response to catastrophe, and asks how its diverse expressions restore hope and prompt us to look forward.
From Sarajevo to New Orleans, from Kigali to Beirut, artists have commented forcefully on their contemporary political and cultural predicament. As a witness, as a way of mourning, as indictment, as critique, as documentation, as an olive branch, and as a herald of hope, art forms the bedrock of recovery. New York, as a cultural capital, cannot afford to overlook the perspectives of artists in any process of rebuilding.
Presented by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. In partnership with the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, New School; ArteEast; Dance New Amsterdam; Joe's Pub; The Kevorkian Center, NYU; the Tribeca Film Institute and the Tribeca Film Festival.
