Lung Cancer Alliance Acknowledges One Year Anniversary of Peter Jennings' Passing

WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) acknowledges the anniversary of legendary newsman Peter Jennings' passing. It was on this emotional day one year ago that the world drew a spotlight on the most stigmatized, lethal, and misunderstood of all cancers -- lung cancer. Jennings' very private acknowledgement that he had lung cancer helped alert the world that former smokers and those who never smoked at all can also be diagnosed with lung cancer. Unfortunately, an estimated 170,000 more Americans have received a lung cancer diagnosis in the last year alone.

We extend our thoughts and prayers to the Jennings family. In Jennings' honor and on behalf of the family and loved ones of patients, survivors and those we've lost to the disease, Lung Cancer Alliance remains committed to leading the movement to reverse decades of stigma and neglect by empowering those with or at risk for the disease, elevating awareness and changing health policy.

Laurie Fenton, president of Lung Cancer Alliance, is available for interview and comment.

The Lung Cancer Alliance (http://www.lungcanceralliance.org/) is the only national non-profit organization solely dedicated to patient support and advocacy for people living with or at risk for lung cancer. As the number one cancer killer, lung cancer will kill more than 160,000 Americans this year alone, causing more deaths than breast, prostate, colon, liver, kidney cancers and melanoma combined. In January 2006, LCA issued the first-ever Report Card on Lung Cancer, an assessment of progress being made in the battle against this lethal disease. The majority of grades received were failing.
