Nine Tyler Perry DVD Titles Combined Sell More Than 11 Million Units for Lionsgate to Date, Led by Last Week's DVD Release of The Theatrical Hit MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION
SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Tyler Perry franchise is proving to be as unstoppable as Madea, the character he has portrayed so famously on the stage and screen. The DVD debut of Perry's theatrical film MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION combined forces with the DVD's of Perry's stage shows Madea Goes To Jail and Why Did I get Married to account for 3.6 million units sold in their opening week, with all three titles debuting in the top 10, it was announced today by Lionsgate President Steve Beeks.
Lionsgate (NYSE:LGF), the leading independent filmed entertainment studio, has now released nine DVD's based on Tyler Perry's works in the past year, and they have already sold over 11 million units to date. Debuting on home video and DVD on June 27th, MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION alone sold over two million units in the United States in its first week. The title, along with DVD's of the stage productions of Madea Goes to Jail and Why Did I Get Married, occupied three spots on this week's top DVD charts, bringing to six the total number of Tyler Perry DVD releases to debut in the top 10 for Lionsgate. Released theatrically by Lionsgate in February 2006, MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION debuted at number one at the domestic theatrical box office on its way to grossing $63 million in domestic box office. Tyler Perry's two theatrical films for Lionsgate have grossed a combined $113 million at the North American box office.

The success of the three new Tyler Perry DVD releases also benefited the five previously-released catalog stage plays as they experienced a sales jump of more than 500 percent from the prior week. The stage productions of Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea's Class Reunion, Meet the Browns, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, and Madea's Family Reunion sold more than 150,000 units last week, demonstrating the continuing consumer demand and crossover appeal for all Tyler Perry content.
Since making his film debut with DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN, Tyler Perry has become a multimedia phenomenon with a roster of hugely successful film, stage, television, and book projects. He recently completed his two-year sold-out tour of "Madea Goes to Jail," the stage show he wrote, produced, scored and starred in. Perry's first book, Don't Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings: Madea's Uninhibited Commentaries on Life and Love debuted at #1 on the New York Times' hardcover nonfiction bestseller list the week of April 30th, and is currently at #2 on the list. Finally, Perry created and produced 10 episodes of the syndicated program, "House of Payne," which premiered in New York and Houston to excellent numbers.
