It's back! The Return of Creature Double Feature
Boston's WB Revives 'Creature Double Feature' on Saturday, June 24 at 12 noon
BOSTON, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston's WB will unleash two monster movie classics in the special event of the summer: the return of "Creature Double Feature" on Saturday, June 24 from 12 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. The legendary "Creature Double Feature" (CDF) series ran every Saturday afternoon on WLVI-TV, beginning in the 1970s and running until the late 1980s.
CDF featured two scary movies back-to-back, often hosted by creepy characters such as The Ghoul. The series is fondly remembered by viewers -- many of whom call and e-mail the station, or blog on-line about their favorite childhood creature-feature memories. The cult following and constant demand led Boston's WB to consider a comeback.
"When I was a kid, watching Creature Double Feature stimulated my imagination and love for horror and sci-fi movies. It was a religious experience. These are not silly rubber monster movies to me," says David Hallahan, a 41-year old security officer from Taunton, Mass. who now resides in Cortland, Illinois. Known by his screen name "Dzilla," Hallahan's CDF web site has an active message board and boasts more than 12,000 visitors (http://www.geocities.com/dzilla1964).
Hallahan names rocker Rob Zombie and artist Bob Eggleton as fans who've e-mailed him to keep up the good work. Another notable personality, Boston automotive magnate Ernie Boch, Jr. (http://www.boch.com/), was a horror-movie aficionado who jumped at the chance to be a part of CDF.
"I grew up as a big fan of Creature Double Feature, and wanted to get involved with bringing it back," says Boch. "Boston's WB was all for it, but I had one condition -- I wanted to be the host. It took a little convincing, but I showed them that I was the best Ghoul for the job."
The station staged a 12-hour shoot, recreated The Ghoul's Graveyard and taped ten spooky vignettes, each highlighting The Ghoul's gift for campy fun and horror film trivia. Boch stars as The Ghoul, and introduces a mysterious new sidekick, Mr. Stump. CDF's original host, Gary Newton, passed away in 1998. The announcers varied through the years and included voiceover talent Ron Dwyer, Tom Evans and Dale Dorman.
Quincy-based horror writer L.L. Soares (http://www.llsoares.com/) grew up in New Bedford, and says he is excited about the revival. "Nobody does this kind of show anymore. With horror so big in the theaters these days, the time is ripe for a show like Creature Double Feature to make a comeback. And I hope it sticks around. The next generation of horror fans deserves fun programming like this."
"Creature Double Feature" on Boston's WB will include two movies guaranteed to make your skin crawl:
* Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster (1971, Japanese dubbed in English) --
Godzilla battles a monster that bloats itself on factory and automobile
wastes, then turns it into a sulfuric exhaust that disintegrates
everything it touches.
* The Giant Gila Monster (1959) -- A small town in Texas finds itself
under attack from a hungry, fifty-foot-long Gila monster. No longer
content to forage in the desert, the giant lizard begins chomping on
motorists before descending upon the town itself.
