Hasidic Boy's Story of Struggle, Beyond Eyruv, to Premiere at 2006 SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival

Film's Director, John Mounier, to Speak on Panel 'Envisioning Faith through the Documentary Lens' at SILVERDOCS International Documentary Conference

NEW YORK, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Beyond Eyruv, the story of a Hasidic boy's struggle to build a new life in secular society will have its world premiere at the prestigious 2006 SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival on Saturday, June 17, 2006 at 8:15 PM. Beyond Eyruv will also be a topic of discussion at a special panel at SILVERDOCS International Documentary Conference, which will feature the film's director, John Mounier. The panel will take place Saturday, June 17, 2006 at 2:45 PM.

Named for the symbolic wire boundary erected in Jewish Orthodox communities to extend the carrying laws in the streets during the Sabbath, the film focuses on the emotional and spiritual struggles of 20 year old Moshe as he tries to build a new life in the secular world.

"Raised in the devout Hasidic community, Moshe lived for his faith, which defined every element of his life," said Mr. Mounier. "In questioning his faith, Moshe left Hasidism only to find a host of new challenges and obstacles."

ABOUT THE FILM

Growing up in the Hasidic faith, every aspect of Moshe's life was defined and dictated by scripture. When Moshe turned 18 he escaped Hasidic life, moving to live with his secular grandmother and grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, just outside New York City. Absent the rigorous structure and demands of his ultra-religious upbringing, Moshe struggles to find a new identity. Beyond Eyruv explores the courage and confusion of young Orthodox people who, in search of their identities, are thrust into a fast moving and open culture that is completely foreign.
