Barge Rocks River

Barge Rocks River

History is in the making on Schuylkill Banks! Musicians to perform from a 135-foot barge, each night from June 22-June 25, as part of the Rockin' on the River Concert Series

PHILADELPHIA, June 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Schuylkill Banks, Philadelphia's newest riverfront destination, will be rockin' this weekend with the sounds of gospel, rock, salsa and blues -- all from a barge that will be transformed into a floating stage for its free, outdoor annual concert series starting on Thursday, June 22 and ending Sunday, June 25.

Rockin' on the River, sponsored by Cherry Street West, is a four-day music festival held on the newly refurbished Schuylkill Banks and will feature a wide range of musical genres, with artists performing from a specially outfitted barge docked ten feet from the Banks at the foot of the Walnut Street Bridge. The barge is donated by AP Construction to support the efforts of the Schuylkill River Development Corporation, the lead agency for the redevelopment of the lower Schuylkill River, now known as Schuylkill Banks.

The free concert series includes performances by Philly-styles blues band, The Randy Lippincott Band, Thursday, June 22, 7:30 PM; the Cuban quartet, Conjunto 23, on Friday, June 23, 7:30 PM; a Bluegrass group, Flexible Flyer, on Saturday, June 24, 7:30 PM; and the Gospel sounds of The Mighty Aires of Wilmington, Delaware, on Sunday, June 25, 3:00 PM.

The performances on a floating barge are a sign of the changing nature of the lower Schuylkill River. For decades, it was the first spine of modern industrial development in Pennsylvania and one of the first in the nation. At its peak, in 1859, almost two million tons of coal were handled on mule-drawn barges. Today, the barge on Schuylkill Banks will carry music, promoting and celebrating the revitalization of the Schuylkill River for the benefit of the city, region and Commonwealth.

In addition to the concerts, every other Wednesday night from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM Standard Funk Promotions featuring DJ Kevin Rucker will spin the sounds of soul, R&B, funk, hip-hop and neo-soul on the Walnut Street stairtower landing. Music lovers can also buy tickets for the new Schuylkill Banks River Tours which offer one hour narrated tours of the Schuylkill River. Departures from Walnut Street Dock on Thursdays and Saturdays.
