Should Mama Be Sassy or Sweet? Men and Women Disagree

Mother's Day Survey Shows Men Admire 'Terminator 2' Mom, While Women Want a Steel Magnolia

DALLAS, April 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- If you think men want their moms to be like June Cleaver, guess again.

A Mother's Day survey by BLOCKBUSTER Online(C) asked men which movie mom they'd like to step in if their own was unavailable. Their top choices were butt-kicking Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," followed by sex therapist Roz Focker, played by Barbara Streisand in "Meet the Fockers."

Women, in contrast, took a more traditional approach, preferring Southern flower M'Lynn Eatenton, played by Sally Field in "Steel Magnolias," followed by cool and classy Nina Banks, played by Diane Keaton in "Father of the Bride."

"Men's and women's choices were quite different, but it's clear we all want a mom who's strong and supportive," said Shane Evangelist, senior vice president and general manager for BLOCKBUSTER Online. "Men, however, want mom to be prepared for anything. Even mercenary robots from the future."

Other favorites for fantasy movie mom among both men and women included the nurturing figure of Marmee March (played by Susan Sarandon in "Little Women"), strong and sassy Madea (played by Tyler Perry in "Diary of a Mad Black Woman") and briefcase-toting J.C. Wiatt (played by Diane Keaton in "Baby Boom").

When it came to the movie mom they'd least like as their own, men and women wholeheartedly agreed: wire hanger-hating Joan Crawford, played by Faye Dunaway in "Mommie Dearest."

"'Mommie Dearest' is a prime example of what we all know to be true: if Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy," said Evangelist.

Nagging, neurotic or slightly psychotic behavior put several moms at the top of the least wanted movie mom list, including Margaret White (played by Piper Laurie in "Carrie"), Viola Fields (played by Jane Fonda in "Monster In- Law") and Mrs. Lift (played by Anne Ramsey in "Throw Mama from the Train").

Other movie moms that scared survey respondents include Deborah Clasky (played by Tea Leoni in "Spanglish"), Mrs. Robinson (played by Anne Bancroft in "The Graduate") and Eleanor Shaw (played by Meryl Streep in "The Manchurian Candidate").

To rent these and other titles featuring famous movie moms, visit BLOCKBUSTER Online at www.blockbuster.com . With more than 50,000 movie titles on the subscription site, that's a lot of movie moms to choose from.
