ReacTV Enters TV Game Show Fray With Bold Challenge
Targets MTV Silver Anniversary Date for Cable Launch
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., and ATLANTA, April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Upstart TV InterNetwork Gaming Channel ReacTV today announced that it has formally entered the TV space with a bold, two phase challenge: To pass more homes on its launch date than the legendary MTV network on its first day, and to top MTV's current average advertising ratings within 500 days of ReacTV's launch. To commemorate the official launch of ReacTV, the company has also announced today at Atlanta's NCTA convention that the InterNetwork has delayed its launch date by 16 days, to August 1, 2006, to precisely fall on MTV's 25th anniversary date of August 1, 1981.
Taking a page from Joe Namath's play book, ReacTV founder and CEO Frank S. Maggio explains that the first part of his challenge is already in the bag. "Because we are the world's first TV InterNetwork, we aren't lumbered with the same barriers to entry that MTV faced 25 years ago. We will be synchronizing and simulcasting our ReacTV 77 content and ads live over the Internet, allowing every broadband connected home -- and office -- to receive our network, even if their cable or satellite provider does not yet offer our channel." Based on current estimates of broadband penetration in the United States alone, upwards of 50 million households and workplaces will therefore be considered "passed" on the network's first date. ReacTV will be adding a dial-up support version before year-end, boosting its TV InterNetwork households passed to over 100 million.
ReacTV's much-anticipated business model is to charge advertisers a flat fee per thousand, based only on the precise number of viewers that watch their ads every second -- another industry first. To derive ad ratings, ReacTV will hurdle another barrier -- deriving accurate ratings without the use of Nielsen Media Research. Combining second-by-second TV viewership data provided by Nielsen's arch rival, erinMedia, along with web ratings collected through New York-based Internet ratings provider 24/7, ReacTV will provide its advertisers with combined, second-by-second TV/web demographic ratings on an overnight basis. ReacTV will launch with seven hours of live content and ads every day, seven days a week, from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM ET. This places its content squarely in prime time across the entire nation.
The maverick InterNetwork sees itself as the "Robin Hood of TV," and has also publicly pledged to give back 30% of its net ad revenues to the viewers at home and work who watch its ads and games. ReacTV has exclusively licensed CEO Maggio's U.S. patent for reactive CRAV advertising -- broadcast or webcast commercials that ask viewers questions to prove attention, and then reward them for correctly answering. Based on the mathematics involved, once ReacTV reaches hourly average viewers of one million people, ReacTV plans to award $1 million in cash and prizes -- DAILY. Maggio believes that this will occur before Christmas 2007.
ReacTV President Noreen Parker was able to see live and first-hand the reactions of viewers as they played against one another to ReacTV's patent pending "dynamic switching" game engine and patented CRAV ads at the NCTA show on Sunday. ReacTV will be staging mini live games every half hour at the cable convention, which ends on Tuesday April 11. "The delight that people are showing while playing our games and watching our ads is priceless, something we would never get to see in the normal Internet environment," says Ms. Parker. "Once word gets out about our network and the volume of prizes we give away for watching our ads every ten minutes on the 7's, I think Frank's challenge to beat MTV's ratings in 500 days will happen even sooner than he thinks."
ReacTV will be simulcast in markets where operators provide access to TV channel 77. The website featuring the live content and ads will be accessed at http://www.77.tv/ . ReacTV ultimately intends to launch ten reactive networks, spanning channels 70 to 79, by the end of this decade. A Spanish version of ReacTV 77, called Triunfo 70, is slated for channel 70 within the next 12 months.
