Lionsgate and Panamax Films to Release LA MUJER DE MI HERMANO as First Movie in Venture's Spanish-Language Feature Film Initiative
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF; TSX), the leading independent filmed entertainment studio, and Panamax Films are set to release the first film in their U.S. distribution pact, LA MUJER DE MI HERMANO, this Friday, April 14, in approximately 200 theatres in about 20 major markets, representing one of the largest openings for a Spanish-language film targeted to Latino audiences in the United States. The release was announced today by Tom Ortenberg, Lionsgate President of Theatrical Films and James M. McNamara, Chairman of Panamax.
Panamax has entered into a multi-year agreement with Lionsgate to develop and produce Spanish/Latino films for the North American and worldwide market, following up on Lionsgate's proven success targeting African-American family, faith-based and horror genre audiences.
"We loved this film from the moment we first saw it and knew it was a story we had to share with audiences everywhere," said Ortenberg. "Ricardo de Montreuil possesses a distinctive filmmaking voice and we are looking forward to bringing his vision to theaters. Lionsgate is uniquely positioned to market and distribute films to targeted moviegoing audiences, and we are delighted to kick off our long-term commitment to Spanish-language feature films with LA MUJER."
"Lionsgate is the perfect home for LA MUJER," said McNamara. "The Company has crafted a strategy of delivering commercially exciting, quality films to targeted segments of the moviegoing audience. With a population of approximately 42 million Latinos living in the United States, LA MUJER taps the largest underserved audience in America today. The strength of Spanish- language television programming and the DVD market for Latinos tells us that there is a potentially large appetite for commercial Spanish-language films with high production values, and we feel this is a perfect first film to begin gaining entry into this market."
The film was produced by Stan Jakubowicz (Venezuela) and features creative talent with broad pan-Latin appeal. It is directed by Ricardo de Montreuil (Peru), written by Jaime Bayly (Chile) and stars red hot telenovela sensation Barbara Mori (Mexico), Manolo Cardona (Colombia), Christian Meier (Peru), Angelica Aragon (Mexico), Bruno Bichir (Mexico) and Gabriela Espino (Venezuela), with a cameo appearance by Beto Cuevas (Chile), leader of the multi-platinum alternative rock group LA LEY.
After almost 10 years of marriage, the stunningly attractive Zoe (Mori) realizes that her marriage to Ignacio (Meier) lacks passion and surprise and looks to rediscover these emotions in the arms of Gonzalo (Cardona), her husband's brother, launching a series of events that drives all three through a gauntlet of passion, secrets and revenge.
LA MUJER has been released in Latin America to strong critical acclaim and box office success, becoming the number one R-Rated film in Mexico with approximately $3.5 million at the box office and becoming a number one box office hit in Venezuela, Colombia and Peru.
Lionsgate is the leading independent filmed entertainment studio, fresh off the number one box office hits MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION, HOSTEL and SAW II and the Best Picture Academy Award(R) for CRASH.
