Dave Brubeck to Receive the First Ever High Note of Achievement Award From the Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York

Jazz Legend Recognized at Annual Gala and Benefit

NEW YORK, April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York will honor jazz great and American music icon, Dave Brubeck, by presenting him with the first ever High Note of Achievement Award. Mr. Brubeck, an equally distinguished composer and jazz pianist, is being recognized for his lifetime achievements as a leading edge musician and for his commitment and contribution to the national advancement of arts and music education. He will receive the award at Gramercy Brass' annual gala and benefit on Monday, April 24th being held at the Time Warner Center's Cafe Gray.

For 17 years, Mr. Brubeck led the Dave Brubeck Quartet introducing legions of new fans to the world of jazz and producing the first ever million selling jazz single, Take Five. As a composer, Brubeck has written and/or recorded several large-scale works including ballets, a musical, four cantatas and many solo pieces. In addition to his work in the jazz community, Mr. Brubeck is also well known for his focus on advancing key social and philosophical issues. To that end, the University of Pacific, Mr. Brubeck's alma mater, established the Brubeck Institute in 2000. Today the Institute offers outreach, fellowship and summer programs as well as access to Mr. Brubeck's archives and a Summer Jazz Colony to current and future musicians.

The Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York established the High Note of Achievement Award to spotlight individuals and organizations that are broadening the reach of jazz and encouraging continued social advancements through music and the arts. The award will be presented to a new recipient each year at the organization's annual gala benefit. This year, jazz great Dr. Billy Taylor will present the award to Mr. Brubeck and notable jazz pianist/vocalist Dena DeRose will MC the event. Creed Taylor, noted jazz record producer and Downbeat Magazine's 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award winner will also be in attendance.

Founded in 1982 by John Henry Lambert, Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York is dedicated to developing and promoting an appreciation for the unique blend of spirited sound and artistry of brass instrumentation. The Orchestra had its debut concert at Alice Tully Hall in May 1995.
