Austin Green Art Presents 'Rock the Block' Earth Day Arts Festival in Temporarily-Converted Downtown Vacant Lot

Musicians Alejandro Escovedo and Roky Erickson to Perform on a Solar-Powered Stage; Sculptors Chris Fennell and Randy Jewart to Create Large-Scale Installations

AUSTIN, Texas, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Austin Green Art has announced the presentation of "Rock the Block," an engaging outdoor Art Festival on Earth Day, April 22, 2006. Rock the Block will showcase musical and visual artists in an artist-created site on a vacant lot in downtown Austin.

"The beauty of this event is its potential to reshape perceptions of how we use public spaces, especially urban spaces," explains Austin Green Art founder and director Randy Jewart. "We will surprise and delight attendees with art where it is least expected."

Artisans, organic food and beverage vendors, environmental groups, kids entertainers, roving performers and a sunset light and laser show will inhabit the vacant lot -- technically known as Block 21 -- for the day-long event. Austin Green Art will install 25 12-foot Green Gates during the festival as part of a citywide public art exhibition. The Green Gates, each showcasing a unique earth-themed artwork, will remain onsite for public viewing through April 30, 2006.

Austin City Council Member Raul Alvarez was instrumental in securing City authorization to use the downtown space. "The combination of music, art, and environmental education is inspiring," notes Alvarez.

The Rock the Block Art Festival and Music Concert will take place at Block 21, 2nd Street and Lavaca, in downtown Austin. Free parking is available in the City Hall garage.

Admission to Art Festival is free, gates open at 10 a.m. The Rock the Block concert event, featuring David Garza, Roky Erickson, and Alejandro Escovedo, begins at 5 p.m. Tickets to the outdoor concert are $10.
