University of Pittsburgh Accepting Applications for Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship

PITTSBURGH, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Mellon Financial Corporation and the University of Pittsburgh today announced that applications are being accepted for the Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship.

Now in its 20th year, the one-year, $5,000 Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship is awarded by a panel of nationally recognized jazz musicians on the basis of musical ability as demonstrated by an audition tape or CD that includes samplings of various musical styles. Any full-time undergraduate student who will be enrolled at Pitt during the fall 2006 semester is eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The current Pitt/Mellon Jazz scholar, bass player Dan Doan, is a senior at Pitt, where he is a History and Philosophy of Science major, pre-med, and carries a minor in neuroscience. A violin and piano player by the age of 5, he switched to the bass during his teen years, and has been playing upright and electric bass ever since. A member of the Pitt Jazz Ensemble, he has performed in Jamaica with the Ensemble under the direction of Nathan Davis, professor of music and head of Pitt Jazz Studies.

"The 2006 Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship continues two decades of our support for jazz education and its vital contribution to preserving this art form's rich Pittsburgh heritage," said Rose M. Gabbianelli, Mellon executive vice president and director of corporate affairs.

Applications for the Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship must be submitted by Monday, May 15, 2006.
