Esteemed Scientists From Across the Country Show Support for New Global Warming PSA Campaign

NEW YORK, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Some of the world's top climate scientists are showing unprecedented support for a new PSA campaign to educate Americans on reducing the impact of global warming. Launched today by the Ad Council and Environmental Defense, the campaign includes massive television, radio, print, internet and other advertising vehicles.

Following are excerpts from some of the letters received by Environmental Defense.

Nobel Prize winner Dr. F. Sherwood Rowland, University of California- Irvine: "I have seen the TV spots and read the proposed advertisements from Environmental Defense and find that they are appropriate to the real concern felt throughout the scientific world about the future of our planet... Two decades have passed, and the future has become the present, and action is even more obviously needed now."

Dr. John Wallace, University of Washington: "...the risk of serious irreversible consequences within the next 30 years is too great to warrant complacency. All of us should be making personal choices to reduce unnecessary consumption of fossil fuels..."

Dr. Gavin Schmidt, NASA: "I am a climate modeler at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. I have reviewed the radio and TV ads produced by the Ad Council on the issue of global warming and climate change, and found them to be scientifically valid."

Dr. John Holdren, Harvard University: "I find the written materials scientifically sound, and I very much agree with the sense of urgency conveyed in the TV ad I viewed."

Dr. Michael Oppenheimer, Princeton University: "I find [the ads] to be scientifically valid. In addition, given the urgency of the climate problem, I find the tone of the ads to be quite appropriate."

Dr. William Schlesinger, Duke University: "[The ads] got the science right, and they present it in an appropriately stark, powerful fashion. I look forward to seeing them on the air."

Dr. Steven Wofsy, Harvard University: "[The ads are] well documented and supported by reference to the scientific literature... We do know that there are very strong reasons to be concerned... It is very risky behavior to fail to take carefully considered, vigorous steps to reduce the risks..."
