WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR WOMEN IN MODERN DANCE?

When you think of Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis, and Martha Graham, the role of women as the founders of modern dance is clear, but what of their place in the future? Despite increasing numbers of women creating, performing, and contributing to the field, a Gender Project study (http://www.dancenyc.org/) confirmed that presenting and promotional opportunities for women are steadily diminishing. Barnard College and the Williamsburg Art neXus (WAX) have created SUGAR SALON to stir things up and help address the issue, launching the series with a conversation among five pioneering women in the field:

* Marisa Beatty, Barnard Class of '97 (Moderator) -- Co-Founder/Executive
Director, WAX

* Janis Brenner -- Artistic Director, Janis Brenner & Dancers; Gender

up-and-coming women choreographers as they work independently on campus
to create new pieces for their companies.
