Vertasent and Broadbus Partner to Deliver Next-Generation Television-On-Demand

Complete Interoperability Testing to Further Advancement of On-Demand Video Services in Open-Standards Environments

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- SCTE EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES: Vertasent, a leading developer of advanced video-on-demand (VOD) management systems and Broadbus, the leading provider of next-generation VOD server technology, announced a collaboration to promote and enable the next generation of Television-On-Demand.

The companies have completed interoperability testing between Vertasent's integrated resource management solution and Broadbus' B-1 VOD server and management software. The companies' products are complementary and are aimed toward the smooth evolution from today's limited VOD offering to a totally on- demand television experience.

"Vertasent is very pleased to be working with Broadbus and its next- generation on-demand server platform. Our applications form a bridge between the old and the new and help allow Broadbus' potential to be fully realized in legacy VOD sites," said Fred Allegrezza, CEO of Vertasent.

The Vertasent integrated resource management solution allows multiple services including VOD, Switched Digital Broadcast, VOIP, and IPTV to share headend resources and plant bandwidth. Vertasent's integrated multivendor, multiservice, resource management solution eliminates the software integration headaches associated with launching a new service.

"Broadbus's work with the Vertasent integrated resource management platform enables our products to share headend resources with other video servers, cable modem termination systems (CMTS), and switched digital broadcast sessions. When these services share the same network, the possibilities become endless," said Tom Kennedy, senior director of marketing for Broadbus. "Broadbus is committed to an open approach to the delivery of on-demand services and our collaboration with companies like Vertasent ensure that operators are deploying the best, most flexible solution to fit their needs today and in the future."

Combining advanced services onto the same network infrastructure allows interesting "combo" services to be created. For example, Broadbus and Vertasent are developing an architecture that combines the benefits of switched digital broadcast and nDVR into the same open system offering. This combination allows the bandwidth saving application of switched digital broadcast to be enhanced with the power of nDVR control.

Fred Allegrezza continued, "The Vertasent Integrated Resource Management suite provides cable operators with virtually unlimited choice and flexibility. They have the choice of adding best of breed servers to existing sites and offer a deeper title library or enable new services such as nDVR. They have the flexibility to add or expand services such as switched digital broadcast and Modular CMTS without re-architecting their networks. They also have the flexibility to constantly evolve their offering, perhaps from an MPEG-2 transport system today to an IPTV system tomorrow by adjusting configuration values."

Vertasent's products include Edge Resource Management, Session Management, Streaming Management, Asset Management and Switched Broadcast Management.

Broadbus enables cable operators to provide broader and better performing video-on-demand experiences to their customers. Built upon a unique carrier- class, switch-based architecture, the Broadbus B-1 Video Server offers the highest stream density in the industry at less than one-tenth the footprint and one-eighth the power requirements of traditional systems. The company is dedicated to bolstering system reliability and operational efficiency, resulting in increased revenues and profitability for service providers.
