A Grittier Sammy Glick Returns to the NY Stage in the Era of Enron and Abramoff
NEW YORK, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Carl Anthony Tramon stars in a gritty new production of Budd Schulberg's classic Broadway musical What Makes Sammy Run? well suited to the era of Enron and Abramoff.
Portrayed by Carl Anthony Tramon whose Broadway credits include Peter Pan, Fame, Rags, and Gypsy, at age 16 Sammy Glick rises from the squalor of New York's lower east side, transforming himself into a Hollywood mogul by backstabbing and betrayal at Manhattan's West End Theatre, opening Jan. 19. http://www.whatmakessammyrun.net/
"This story is so relevant today considering ethics scandals in the news. The irony is it was written in a more ethical time," said Tramon. "Back then one might say, 'Wow, Sammy's a really bad person,' now they'll say 'Hey, I know that guy!'"
The original 1964 Broadway production starring Steve Lawrence was prettied up, softening Sammy so he'd be more appealing, but shortchanging the edge that Schulberg and composer-lyricist Ervin Drake envisioned when they wrote it.
"We think today's audience will be very receptive to the honesty of this production, which retains all the fun of the original but is more faithful to our original vision," said Drake, best known for "It Was A Very Good Year."
Tramon typically plays happy teenagers so Sammy's cynical schemer is a change of pace. "You sing and dance while doing horrible things onstage ... then go home and feed the cat!" said Tramon, a regular on NBC's hit "Saved by the Bell," with WB pilot "SpaceBoyz," slated to air this year, among his TV credits.
The green-eyed Tramon stepped onstage at three, studied acting at the Royal Academy in London, and just returned from an international tour as lead singer of the group "Uneti." His character also played violin to rave reviews in Fame.
Tramon is also "the voice" of Sound Associates' audio description service for the blind, D-Scriptive(TM), on Broadway at Wicked, Hairspray and Mamma Mia! "My friends joke that there are really three Carl Anthony Tramons doing all these projects," quipped Tramon.
What Makes Sammy Run?, adapted and directed by Robert Armin, runs Jan. 19 - 29, West End Theatre, NYC. Tickets at http://www.smarttix.com/ or call 212-868-4444.
