Nirvana Tops Rock Music Poll

Nirvana Tops Rock Music Poll

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The votes are in. The Greatest Rock Band of all-time is .... Nirvana.

During 2005, rock music fans voted in the annual RockinTown.com music poll. The tally has been taken every year since RockinTown.com, an online rock music magazine, started in 1999.

With over 5,000 votes counted, Nirvana walked away with just under 35% of the vote. Led Zeppelin came in second. The Beatles grabbed the #3 spot. Twenty-seven groups or performers were nominated, including Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M. and Pearl Jam.

In past years, The Beatles and U2 have topped the poll. "It goes to show how perspectives have changed," said RockinTown.com co-founder Ian Lord. Voting has begun for 2006. Nirvana already owns a commanding lead.

"Nirvana still has a major hold on the rock audience," said Lord. "They single-handedly blew away a vapid music scene and put raw passion into their music." Visitors to RockinTown.com voted for their favorite artist from a list of nominees. They could also nominate an act. "Fans from all across North America, Europe and even Australia participated," added Lord.

"Led Zeppelin has never topped the poll but they have always placed in the Top 5," said Lord. "It's a tribute to their influence and staying power." The Beatles returned to the Top 3 after a four year absence. "The (Paul) McCartney tour and the 25th anniversary of (John) Lennon's death probably had a lot to do with it," added Lord, a rock music writer.

Any surprises? "Green Day should have done better," said Lord. "'American Idiot' was a brilliant album. Maybe they need a get-out-the-vote drive." Green Day barely made the Top 20 coming in at #18. "The Rolling Stones had their best album in decades, 'A Bigger Bang,' but the best they could do was 11th," said Lord.

RockinTown.com features over 600 artist biographies covering rock's five decades. There is a calendar with a daily list of key events in rock history. For those who know everything, there's rock trivia and a forum on a variety of rock-related subjects.
