Former NFL Players Say 'Teams Use Players; Don't Care About Preventing Injuries' During Interview on Motion DNA TV

Former NFL Players Say 'Teams Use Players; Don't Care About Preventing Injuries' During Interview on Motion DNA TV

Anquan Boldin's Injuries Preventable

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With the NFL playoffs in full swing after another injury filled season, in a candid interview on Motion DNA TV, a product of Motion DNA Corp. (Pink Sheets: MTDX), former National Football League wide receiver Chris Walsh discusses many controversial subjects relating to life in the NFL. Walsh played 11 seasons in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and the Minnesota Vikings. The episode airs Sunday, January 15 at 9 p.m. on AZTV in the Phoenix area.

Walsh discussed the increase of injuries in the NFL and the teams' lack of quality treatment for its athletes.

"At the pro level, you're dealing more and more with injuries," Walsh said. "Teams don't really help you that much. They're all about ice bags and take some ibuprofen. There is not a lot of rehab going on, it's all up to the players to keep themselves healthy."

Walsh suffered numerous injuries during his NFL career, and mentioned there is a players' code that implies that you don't want to let your teammates or coaches down.

"You're playing through pain the entire time," Walsh said. "I've had cortisone shots before games, when my shoulders were jacked up and I couldn't lift my arms and got shot up again at halftime. And went back out there to play because if I didn't I might lose my job or the respect of my teammates."

"The NFL will use you because you're a valuable asset until you're done playing, and then at that point they pretty much wash their hands of you," Walsh continued. "You would think they would want to do everything they could to help you perform at the best of your abilities, give you all the necessary treatment to be healthy, but that is not the case. You're really responsible for this on your own."

Walsh comments that many players don't use team doctors for serious injuries, but will instead consult with experts like Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama, or Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail, Colorado.

"Every team has a doctor," Walsh said. "But when players get injured, they don't go see the team doctor. There is a conflict of interest because the doctor is paid by the team."

"There is a fine line between when are you injured and when are you in pain," Walsh said. "The team just wants you to play. As an athlete you have to look out for your own best interests, which is tough because if you're not playing, they'll say we can't rely on you. But if you play and hurt yourself to the point where you ruin your career, then you're done as well."

In the interview, Walsh also comments on training techniques, artificial surfaces and today's pro athletes. And suggests the NFL should invest a few million dollars on products like those which Motion DNA offers to help prevent injuries before they happen. In 2004, Motion DNA identified in an analysis that Arizona Cardinal's All-pro wide receiver was as risk for an injury to his right knee.

"As if we could predict the future, Anquan's injury happened because the Cardinals staff and Anquan's high paid personal trainers ignored the results," said Zig Ziegler, President and Founder of Motion DNA. "It cost him eight games in 2004 and another two games during the 2005 season because Anquan's the type of player who won't complain ... just goes out and plays the game without worrying about getting injured."

In a separate interview on the Motion DNA show, former NFL player Irv Smith, who spent eight years in the NFL reiterated Walsh's statements saying, "It's the code. You are expected to play with pain and injury even at the risk of ending your career. Some coaches care, but for teams, it's a business." Smith's interview will air during the January 22 broadcast of the Motion DNA show. The interviews were filmed at Scottsdale, Arizona's location of the Fox Sports Grill. The show will be rebroadcast beginning Monday, January 16, 2006 on www.motiondnatv.com where all previously aired shows may be viewed.

The Motion DNA Show is expected to begin national broadcasting on the Fox Sports Network nationwide in the upcoming weeks.
