PASADENA, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The January 4 ABC telecast of the highly anticipated 2006 Rose Bowl Game National Championship presented by Citi -- which featured an exciting match up, with Texas defeating USC 41-38 to earn the national title -- earned an outstanding national household average rating of 21.7. In other words, the average number of U.S. households with at least one television set tuned to the 2006 Rose Bowl Game at any time during the four hour telecast was 23.9 million households, or 21.7% of the estimated 110.2 million U.S. households. (Each 1.0 HH rating point equals 1.102 million households, according to 2005-2006 estimates by Nielsen Media Research). ABC reported that Nielsen Media Research estimated that the total HH audience rating for the 2006 Rose Bowl Game telecast was an extraordinary 39.2, meaning that 43.2 million or 39.2% (nearly two out of every five) of all U.S. households watched at least 5 minutes of the Rose Bowl Game at some portion during the evening.
The 2006 Rose Bowl HH rating of 21.7 was nearly 60% greater than the 13.7 HH rating for last year's BCS National Championship Game between USC and Oklahoma in the 2005 Fed-Ex Orange Bowl Game.
"We could not have asked for a more exciting Rose Bowl Game National Championship than the one we had on Wednesday," said 2006 Tournament of Roses President Libby Evans Wright. "We are delighted that, at every minute during the four hour telecast, more than 35 million football fans were watching ABC to catch the thrilling action and witness the crowning of college football's new national champion."
The "through the roof" audience level for the 2006 Rose Bowl Game television coverage is evidenced by the fact that the average audience of the ABC telecast was 35.6 million viewers, age 2+. This makes the 2006 Rose Bowl Game telecast the most-watched television program of any network, of any type (entertainment or sports) so far during the 2005-2006 television season. The 2006 Rose Bowl telecast audience was more than 15% larger than the most-watched episode of the no. 1 entertainment program ("CSI" -- December 8 episode, average audience of 30.95 million viewers, 2+) and more than 35% larger than the most-watched NFL regular season telecast in Fall 2005 (Thanksgiving Day, CBS, Denver at Dallas, average audience of 26.38 million viewers).
Nielsen Media Research reported that more than 68.5 million viewers, age 2+, watched at least 5 minutes of the 2006 Rose Bowl Game telecast on January 4.
Even more dramatic is the fact that the 2006 Rose Bowl Game average audience of 35.6 million viewers was nearly double the average audience for the 2006 Fed-Ex Orange Bowl Game telecast on January 3 (average of 18.65 million viewers) and greater than the combined television audience on Monday, January 2 for the 2006 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl (average of 20.60 million viewers) and for the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl (average of 13.68 million viewers).
The final national household (HH) rating of 21.7 for the 2006 Rose Bowl Game is the first television program by any network and of any type, entertainment or sports, to report a HH rating of 20.0 or greater for the current television season of 2005-2006.
The final national HH rating of 21.7 for the January 4, 2005 Rose Bowl game makes it the highest-rated Rose Bowl Game in 20 years -- since the 1986 Rose Bowl (UCLA-Iowa) which reported a HH rating of 22.7 -- and the highest-rated bowl game in 19 years, since the January 2, 1987 Fiesta Bowl Game (Miami-Penn State), which reported a 25.3 HH rating.
The 117th Rose Parade themed It's Magical took place Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at 8 a.m. (PST) featuring majestic floral floats, high-stepping equestrian units and spirited marching bands from throughout the nation and was telecast nationally by the ABC, NBC and Univision broadcast networks, by the HGTV, Travel Channel and Discovery HD cable networks, and regionally by Tribune Broadcasting (KTLA in Los Angeles) and the Telemundo network (KWHY in Los Angeles). National television audience statistics for the parade will not be available from Nielsen Media Research until after January 12.
