'Match Point' Scores Four Golden Globe Nominations

'Match Point' Scores Four Golden Globe Nominations

GLENDALE, Calif., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Woody Allen's acclaimed drama "Match Point" emerged as one of the front runners at the Golden Globe Awards with an impressive four nominations, including one for Best Picture - Drama. Director/writer Woody Allen was honored with dual nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and Scarlett Johansson earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination.

The DreamWorks release was not only tied for second in total nods, it is the only Best Picture - Drama nominee not even to have opened in theatres at the time of the nominations. "Match Point" will open in limited release in New York and Los Angeles on December 28, and will be released wider in January 2006.

"Match Point" has been riding a wave of critical acclaim since its premiere at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, with many critics agreeing that it rivals the best movies of Woody Allen's illustrious career. As the film has begun to screen for audiences in anticipation of its theatrical release, many moviegoers have echoed the critics' praise.

This is not the first time Allen has been doubly Golden Globe-nominated in the same year. He previously earned dual nods for Best Director and Best Screenplay for "Hannah and Her Sisters," "Interiors" and "Annie Hall."

This also marks the third consecutive year that Scarlett Johansson has received a Golden Globe nomination. She was nominated last year for "A Love Song for Bobby Long," and she earned two nominations the previous year for "Lost in Translation" and "Girl With a Pearl Earring."

"Match Point" is a drama about ambition and obsession, the seduction of wealth, and the often irreconcilable relationship between love and sexual passion. Perhaps most importantly, however, the story reveals the huge part luck plays in the events of our lives, refuting the comforting misconception that more of life is under our control than really is.

Written and directed by Academy Award(R) winner Woody Allen ("Annie Hall," "Hannah and Her Sisters"), "Match Point" stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers ("Bend It Like Beckham," TV's "Elvis"), Scarlett Johansson ("Lost in Translation," "Girl With a Pearl Earring"), Emily Mortimer ("Lovely and Amazing," "Dear Frankie"), Matthew Goode ("Chasing Liberty"), Brian Cox ("The Bourne Identity," "Red Eye") and Penelope Wilton ("Iris," "Pride & Prejudice").

DreamWorks SKG was formed in October 1994 by its three principal partners -- Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. The studio is actively involved in the production of live-action motion pictures and network and cable television programs, and the distribution of live-action and animated feature films, as well as home video entertainment.
