Yang Lan Co-Chairs the 33rd International Emmy Awards Gala
SHANGHAI, China, Nov. 23 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Sun Media Investments Holdings Ltd. announced today that their co-founder, famous TV host Yang Lan, was chairperson of the 33rd International Emmy Awards that was held on Monday, November 21 in New York City.
The International Emmy Awards, held in November each year in New York, attracts over 1,000 international figures from the global TV industry. It is one of the top awards in the international TV field that recognizes excellence in television programmes produced outside of the United States.
Founded in 1969, the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is one of the largest organizations of global broadcasters, with over 500 members from nearly 70 countries and over 350 companies. Since its founding, it presents Emmy Awards to those quality global programmes produced outside the US.
The Awards' Gala Dinner was co-chaired by Yang Lan and Michael Lynton, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Sony Pictures Entertainment. Mainstream global TV organizations attended the Gala including the BBC and NHK. U.S. Sen. Hilary Rodham Clinton, wife of former US President Bill Clinton, also presented at the Gala.
The International Emmy Founders Award was presented to Oprah Winfrey, for her international broadcasting career. Chinese actress He Lin was the first ever Chinese Emmy winner, winning in the 'Best Actress' category for her starring role as A Xiu in the TV film ''Slave Mother,'' produced by China's CCTV Film Channel.
During an interview, Yang Lan said, ''In a world that is full of conflicts and crisis, we need a public platform as effective as TV to be a communicator. TV plays a significant role in conveying civilization across different regions and countries. At the same time, the TV industry has achieved rapid progress over the past 20 years. At the beginning, people watched the same black and white TV in the same corridor. Now TV prevalence has reached over 90%. We are proud of the progress.'' She also went on to say, ''In this year's awards, Chinese actress He Lin won the Best Actress award, which was China's first ever. She is the pride of China. Meanwhile, I also hope the Chinese peers will work hard to produce more TV programming recognizable on the international arena.
Yang Lan once acted as appraiser of the 2002 and 2003 Emmy Award for Documentary Film and Art Documentary Film.
