Trey Anastasio Slated for National Television Appearances As 'Shine' Tour Rolls on to Glowing Reviews
Artist's Columbia Records Debut Album, 'Shine,' In Stores Now
NEW YORK, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Trey Anastasio has been scheduled for several very special late night television appearances in support of Shine, his debut album for Columbia Records and first solo project since the dissolution of his rock band Phish in 2004.
Currently on-tour with his new band, 70 Volt Parade, Anastasio is slated to appear on the "Late Show with David Letterman" (Friday, November 11, 2005), "Late Night with Conan O'Brien (Thursday, November 17, 2005), the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (Thursday, December 8, 2005), and the "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (Monday December 12, 2005).
Trey's fall tour kicked off November 2 at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota (full itinerary follows), following several October gigs which included two nights opening for the Rolling Stones and a series of triumphant performances in Las Vegas during the Vegoose Music Festival.
Along the tour route, the press has been raving about Trey's performances. "Anastasio's band has gelled with surprising ease," wrote Variety while RollingStone.com praised the "straightforward big-rock force that rarely allowed himself in the weird science of Phish."
"Mr. Anastasio is embracing the simpler pleasures of 4/4 time, major chords and songs that simply sound happy," observed the New York Times. "The band draws on familiar styles -- gospel vamps, riffing Southern rock, walking- bass blues, the Grateful Dead's countryish lilt -- and cruises contentedly within them."
Meanwhile, both the underground and mainstream music press has been ecstatic about Trey's new album, Shine, released November 1 in CD and DualDisc formats.
"Anastasio stays true to himself with a great new solo album," wrote Performing Songwriter while Relix praised Shine's " ... highly infectious, hook-laden vignettes."
Billboard zeroed in on the album's " ... succinct songwriting and clever hooks ... " while the Boston Globe welcomed Shine as a " ... sweepingly upbeat record that should prompt open-minded fans to shout a hearty congratulations."
"Anastasio's crafted the loud-but-tasteful, radio-friendly songs Phish were never able to create," said Entertainment Weekly while the LA Times observed "Anastasio embraces proven rock formulas and makes them his own, free from the cul-de-sac jams of Phish and the expectations of fans and drifters."
The Philadelphia Daily News wrote, "The aptly named album, Shine, wrings out cheerful, anthemic songs about traveling, searching, sharing the good times and finding the light."
Produced and mixed by Brendan O'Brien (whose extensive resume ranges from Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Paul Westerberg to Pearl Jam and Rage Against The Machine), Shine premieres 12 new studio recordings by Trey Anastasio (many of them road-tested in the past year by Trey's touring ensemble, 70 Volt Parade). O'Brien plays bass, keyboards and contributes background vocals to the album and is joined on several tracks by legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop).
All guitar parts and lead vocals on Shine are by Trey Anastasio, who, for the first time on any of his albums (with the exception of the primarily instrumental One Man's Trash but including the Phish catalog) is the record's sole lyricist.
Tracks on Shine include: "Shine," "Tuesday," "Invisible," "Come As Melody," "Air Said To Me," "Wherever You Find It," "Sweet Dreams Melinda" (an older song, cowritten with Russ Lawton and Tony Markellis, heard here with new lyrics and a fresh arrangement), "Love Is Freedom," "Sleep Again," "Spin," "Black," and "Love That Breaks All Lines."
The DualDisc edition of Shine features the album, in its entirety, on the audio side. The DVD component includes the full album in PCM Stereo as well as "Live At Red Rocks," featuring four songs -- "Air Said To Me," "Dark and Down," "Shine," and "Come As Melody" -- from Trey's most recent concert (August 13, 2005) at Colorado's fabled Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The Shine DualDisc also includes behind-the-scenes rehearsals at Red Rocks and an exclusive interview with Trey.
"I'm really excited to get back on the road and start playing the new songs live," said Trey Anastasio at the beginning of his autumn tour. "The road is where the songs grow legs and begin evolving on their own in new and interesting ways. Shine is opening a new door for my music and I can't wait to find out what's on the other side."
