Holiday Spending Continues to Outstrip Charitable Giving

A new report says Americans spent almost as much in two months on holiday items as they did all year on charitable giving in 2004. Figures released by the National Retail Federation show holiday retail sales for November and December 2003 in the general merchandise category were up over five-and-a-half percent, totaling roughly 229-billion dollars. Charitable giving for 2004 topped 248 billion dollars.

Maritz Poll: Auto Consumers Prefer Low Everyday Prices Over Other Sales Incentives

A Martiz Poll finds consumers prefer low retail pricing on vehicles overwhelmingly over other auto incentive models including zero percent financing, three-year lower gas price guarantee, an employee discount for everyone, a cash back rebate and "no-haggle" pricing.

The results support the move toward a lower transaction price that some automakers have been implementing recently. Maritz' Automotive Research Group, one of the world's leading authorities on automotive customer satisfaction research, conducted the survey of one-thousand adult owners and drivers of vehicles.

Latinos More Likely Than Blacks, Whites to Attend the Largest Public High Schools, According to New Pew Hispanic Center Report

Hispanic teens are more likely than blacks and whites to attend public high schools that have the most students, the highest concentrations of poor students and highest student-teacher ratios, according to a new Pew Hispanic Center analysis. The findings came in one of three studies released by the Center that examined youths in high schools and colleges.

Smokers Misinformed About Smoking's Link to Cancer

A study says women who smoke are more concerned about their habit and their ability to quit than men, yet both genders appear misinformed about smoking and its link to cancer. In a new study presented at CHEST 2005, the 71st annual international scientific assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians, the majority of smokers mistakenly believed nicotine causes cancer, leading many to smoke "light" cigarettes because they believed them to be less harmful. Women also were more likely than men to have feelings of guilt, fear, and worry associated with tobacco use and quitting the habit.
