Operation Can-Do: The Channel 7 Commitment to Reducing Local Hunger
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 will join with Big Boy Restaurants and Detroit World Outreach to sponsor Operation Can-Do. The 27th annual community service campaign collects and distributes food to the hungry in metropolitan Detroit.
Hundreds of area Boy Scouts will kick off the 2005 campaign with a door- to-door "Scouting For Food" collection on Saturday, November 12th. Donations of canned goods to Operation Can-Do can be made at any Big Boy Restaurant in the Detroit metropolitan area through December 31st.
"This year, the metropolitan Detroit community demonstrated its generosity towards the victims of the Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina," said WXYZ Vice President and General Manager Grace Gilchrist. "Now as the need turns local, I've no reservations that through Operation Can-Do metro Detroiters will find it in their hearts to give generously once again."
A portion of the food collected through Operation Can-Do is given to Detroit World Outreach, a non-profit organization that distributes the food to nearly 400 metro Detroit area food banks.
Last year's Operation Can-Do campaign brought in 430,000 pounds of food to help feed families and individuals through soup kitchens and food banks in the tri-county area, feeding over 1.2 million people. Since its inauguration, the program has collected close to 8 million pounds of food, providing over 22 million meals to the hungry of Metropolitan Detroit.
