Legendary Drummer and Musician Mick Fleetwood to be Honored For Work on Hearing Loss Prevention and Treatment

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Mick Fleetwood, award-winning musician and founding member of Fleetwood Mac, will receive the Annie Glenn Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), Saturday, November 19, 2005, Exhibit Hall A, the San Diego Convention Center. The award recognizes Fleetwood's advocacy for the importance of hearing protection and treatment for hearing loss.

Fleetwood, who has a partial hearing loss due to years of not protecting his hearing, wants to warn people about the effects of loud noise, music, and other sources of potentially damaging sounds on hearing health. Most recently, Fleetwood served as national spokesperson for Energizer's "It's Hip to Hear" program to demonstrate ways that people can protect their hearing without giving up their music or disrupting their lifestyle.

The award that Fleetwood will receive was established in 1987 in honor of Annie Glenn, wife of Senator John Glenn, who received treatment for stuttering and who has dedicated herself to helping others with communication disorders. The "Annie" is given annually to an individual who best exemplifies Mrs. Glenn's dedication and spirit. Past recipients of the award include actors James Earl Jones, Jane Seymour, and Marlee Matlin, publicist Henry Rogers, and U.S. Senator Tom Harkin.

ASHA is the national professional organization for more than 120,000 audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists, the professionals who research and treat speech, language, and hearing disorders.
