New Documentary Cites the Need for Massive Reform as the United Nations 'Celebrates' Sixty

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- As the United Nations celebrates its 60th anniversary in New York City, Citizens United Foundation and Peace River Company LLC are releasing a thought provoking documentary detailing the U.N.'s record and performance as it pertains to resolving human rights abuses, improving economic and social development and enhancing world security. Entitled "Broken Promises, The United Nations At 60" (www.brokenpromisesmovie.com), the documentary offers a call to action, discussing the chasm between the ideals and rhetoric of the United Nations and the institution itself.

Narrated by actor Ron Silver and Executive Produced by both Silver and David Bossie, "Broken Promises, The United Nations at 60" features testimonials from many esteemed sources such as General Romeo Dallaire, former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, author and Director of the World Policy Institute at the New School University in New York City Stephen Schlesinger, and survivors of genocide who relate their firsthand accounts of the U.N.'s performance in fulfilling its charter mandate of preserving and defending global human rights and preventing war. The documentary also features developer Donald Trump discussing the U.N. renovation plan.

Mother-to-be Eugenie Mukeshimana recounts her harrowing escape from the massacre and the inability of the U.N. to quell the rioting and mass killings.

"It's not that the U.N. didn't know what was going on. It's just that they were told not to do anything," said Ms. Mukeshimana.

"At sixty, the United Nations is at a crossroads," said co-producer David Bossie. "Unless the U.N. adopts sweeping policy changes, it will render itself completely obsolete. Past history reveals a long list of problems. From the hostilities between India and Pakistan in 1947, to the Arab/Israeli conflicts of the late 1940s, to the slaughter of millions of Cambodian refugees by Pol Pot in the 1970s and the aforementioned hardships and genocide in Rwanda and Bosnia, to the present day oil for food scandal, the U.N. has proven itself to be paralyzed in resolving global conflicts and ending human rights abuses," Bossie added.

While there have been major disappointments and misgivings in the past sixty years of the United Nations, few disagree on the immediate need for massive reform within the U.N.
