Actress, Singer, Radio and Television Performer to be Commemorated on New U.S. Postal Stamp
EVENT: Unveiling ceremony for the 2006 Black Heritage
Commemorative stamp honoring Hattie McDaniel will take
place at Alpha Alpha Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho
Sorority, Inc. annual Founders' Day luncheon. The stamp
will be issued late January 2006.

BACKGROUND: As part of Alpha Alpha Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho
Sorority, Inc, Founders' Day luncheon, the Postal Service
will unveil the 2006 Black Heritage Commemorative stamp
series which honors Hattie McDaniel. Hattie McDaniel was
an honorary of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. This
commemorative stamp highlights the achievements of the
actress, singer, and radio and television performer.
McDaniel became the first African-American to win an
Academy Award for her role in the 1939 film Gone with the
Wind. The stamp will be issued January 2006.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus
of Butler University, Indianapolis, IN on November 12,
1922. Chapters throughout the country will celebrate its
seven Founders with various activities throughout
November.
