Foundation Says Treatment Should Meet Individual Needs

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Stuttering Foundation of America has been flooded with calls following the recent airing of NBC's program Three Wishes with Amy Grant. The TV show aired a segment in which a young man who stutters was given a device to help him deal with this distressing and complex disorder.

Noting there are many options for those who stutter, the Stuttering Foundation urges the public to seek accurate information when looking for help. SFA provides information about many different electronic devices, referrals to speech-language pathologists who specialize in stuttering, and information on how to participate in a new clinical trial.

"Our mission is to inform and educate the public," says Jane Fraser, president of the Foundation. "We are excited by the success many have had with the electronic devices. However, the public should understand that no single method will work for everyone. Treatment should meet individual needs."

The Stuttering Foundation, which is the nation's largest nonprofit group offering help for those who stutter, has resources for parents, children, teens, teachers, physicians, and speech professionals.

For more information, much of it offered free of charge, call the Stuttering Foundation toll-free at 800-992-9392, visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartamudez.org (Spanish), or write info@stutteringhelp.org.
