Mickey Redmond to be Inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame as a Member of Team Canada 1972
DETROIT, Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Mickey Redmond, who is in his 22nd year behind the microphone for the Detroit Red Wings, will be inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame as a member of Team Canada 1972 ("The Hockey Team of the Century"). This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Sports Hall of Fame Gala Induction Dinner, which will be held on November 2, 2005 at Toronto's Fairmont Royal York Hotel.
Redmond was a member of Team Canada 1972, a squad that defeated the Soviet Union in the Summit Series in September of that year. In 2000, the Canadian Press voted Team Canada 1972 "The Team of the Century."
Redmond was part of two Stanley Cup victories as a Montreal Canadien before his trade to the Red Wings in 1971. As a Red Wing, Redmond had back- to-back 50+ goal seasons, only the third player in NHL history ever to do so (behind Bobby Hull & Phil Esposito). He was also voted to the NHL's First All-Star Team in 1972-73 and the Second All-Star Team in 1973-74.
Of his induction, Redmond says: "Playing for this team was a life-altering experience. And now, with this induction, to be in the company of so many greats from the past, is a true honor."
