Notes of Interest:
Anime terms take over four of the top 10 spots on this week's Lycos 50, including Neopets (#3), the popular virtual pet site, which reached its highest rank ever with web users following news that the Neopets franchise was recently purchased by MTV. Neopets have also surfaced in the McDonald's Happy Meals. Just behind Neopets are weekly web favorites, Dragonball (#4) and Pokemon (#8), while Japanese anime cartoon female heroine, Inuyasha (#9), jumps into the top 10. Meanwhile, five years ago this week, Britney Spears hit number one on The Lycos 50 for the first time ever, and today Britney Spears (#1) once again reigns supreme among web users.
Other Notes of Interest:
Making its entrance earlier than ever before in the history of The Lycos 50, Halloween (#37) spooks web users with a 134 percent increase in search activity. The top five Halloween-related searches this week include: Halloween, Halloween Costumes, Halloween Black Angel Wings, Pumpkin Head Halloween Mask and Halloween clip art. If search activity is any indication, it appears the most popular Halloween costumes this year will be based on characters like Willy Wonka or the Oompa Loompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Fantastic Four, Batman and Harry Potters, plus some traditional characters from Star Wars.
