RCA Records Artist Receives Twin VMA Nominations; Will Perform on MTV Awards
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- As she continues to set sales and airplay records, Kelly Clarkson is turning into a one-woman platinum mine. Her second album, "Breakaway," has just been certified triple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The news follows Clarkson's twin nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards, as "Since U Been Gone" is up for Best Pop Video and Best Female Video. Clarkson will perform at the VMAs, broadcast live from Miami's American Airlines Arena on Aug. 28.
The triple-platinum award for "Breakaway" can join the other RIAA certifications on Kelly's mantle: her first album, "Thankful," is double platinum. The first two singles from "Breakaway" are multi-platinum; "Breakaway" is double-platinum and "Since U Been Gone" is triple-platinum.
"Breakaway" is already the fifth best-selling album of the year, according to SoundScan. The album has remained in the top 20 of the Billboard album chart every week since its release on Nov. 30, 2004. There have been over 1.5 million download tracks sold to date from the album, and the single "Behind These Hazel Eyes" is in its tenth consecutive week in the top 10 of the digital downloads chart.
Clarkson has been the undisputed champion of the top 40 charts in 2005. "Breakaway," "Since U Been Gone" and "Behind These Hazel Eyes" have given Kelly three No. 1 hits in a row. Mainstream Top 40 radio loves Clarkson so much that all three songs were in the top 40 portion of Billboard's Hot 100 for several weeks in a row.
But why stop at three chart-toppers? There are more hits to come from the "Breakaway" album. Clarkson is assured of a fourth hit with the release of "Because of You," a song she wrote with former Evanescence members Ben Moody and David Hodges.
As much as top 40 Radio loves Kelly, she is also setting records on Adult Contemporary stations. "Breakaway" has been No. 1 for 21 weeks to date, making it the second-longest running No. 1 song in AC history. "Breakaway" is tied with Celine Dion's "A New Day Has Come" as the longest-running AC No. 1 by a female artist.
