Writer's Arc Announces First Screenwriting Competition
Unique Program Has Some of Hollywood's Biggest Hitters Behind It and a Promise That Aspiring Writers Will Get More Than a Paycheck ... They'll Get a Shot at a Career
LOS ANGELES, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Writer's Arc Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on promoting screenwriting as an art form, announces the launch of its website and screenwriting competition on June 1st. Harnessing a diverse group of under-recognized writer talent from across the nation, winners will enter the Fellowship Program, a 12-week screenwriting intensive, providing a $5,000 cash prize and hands-on, individualized oversight and guidance. Part education, part crash course in the studio rank and file, the Program intends to give hopeful scribes the opportunity of a lifetime. Equally as vital to the experience is the Fellowship Community, a creative cooperation and physical space populated with successful screenwriters and industry professionals.
In early 2005, Hollywood executives Ami Vitori and Amy Kane turned in their corporate cards and parking spaces for exposed brick walls and a room full of hopeful new screenwriting voices. Enough with the quippy one-liners and TV spot-worthy pratfalls, these two women started The Writer's Arc to put the 'writing' back in screenwriting. After a combined fifteen years of developing hundreds of scripts, meeting thousands of writers and watching the handful of projects they felt passionate about never see the light of day, the "Amiys" decided that the current paradigm for moviemaking didn't fit their personal objectives. "I came out here because being an investment banker was too limiting. I wanted to be immersed in a more creative environment, but lately Hollywood has begun to feel more like a widget-making factory than Wall Street," Ms. Vitori explained. Ms. Kane added, "I loved cracking story with writers but at the studio you've got 40-some projects in development to spread your time across. It tends to put you at an arm's distance from the creative process and I was looking to get closer to what I was passionate about."
Ami and Amy met when they worked together on the surf hit, Blue Crush. "We've had the good fortune of working together as production executive and studio executive and the heart of those experiences combined with our intrinsic ability to collaborate will be the cornerstone of the Fellowship."
