New Survey of the 'Class of 9/11' Finds Patriotism Is Not Enough to Inspire New College Graduates to Public Service

The first survey of the "Class of 9/11" -- the first college class to have gone through four years of college affected by the events of that day - reveals that it will take more than an appeal to patriotism to inspire their generation to government service. The survey, commissioned by the Partnership for Public Service and administered to 805 graduating college seniors, shows that 83 percent of the members of the Class of 2005 describe themselves as patriotic and nearly half -- 43 percent -- of them say that the events of 9/11 made them more so. However, while 84 percent of those made more patriotic were instilled with a greater love of country and 50 percent were inspired to display the flag, only 20 percent of students said 9/11 made them more interested in government service.

Employees Can Expect Higher Raises, Says CareerJournal.com

Workers in the U-S can expect a 3 point 7 percent pay raise in 2005 -- the second straight year of increased raises for employees after a three-year decline -- according to a report on CareerJournal.com, The Wall Street Journal's executive career site. The 2005 expected increase is slightly higher than the 3 point 6 percent average raise in 2004, according to data compiled by Salary.com. Average salary increases bottomed out at a five-year low of 3 point 4 percent in 2003, after hitting a five-year high of 4 point 4 percent in 2001. A 3 point 7 percent pay raise would mean that an average worker earning 34-thousand dollars a year can expect to see an additional 24 dollars, 19 cents per week. Those with a salary of 100-thousand dollars can expect an increase of 71 dollars, 15 cents per week.

This year's college graduates have higher financial expectations, combined with a hearty appetite for consumerism, according to the second annual survey by Citibank's Credit-ED financial education program. However, the newly released survey results show a significant disconnect between what students THINK they know about credit and what they actually know. Most upperclassmen feel knowledgeable enough to manage their finances after graduation, yet almost half of those who feel knowledgeable still make significant credit mistakes, revealing that more credit education is needed.
