Don't Teach This Book; Consumer Group Calls on Spurlock to Release His Food Diary

Don't Teach This Book; Consumer Group Calls on Spurlock to Release His Food Diary

Morgan Spurlock is a Shock Entertainer, Not an Educator, CFIF Says

Filmmaker's New Book is as Dishonest as His Movie

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Hoax master Morgan Spurlock, who hoodwinked America with his movie, "Super Size Me," is dipping his snout back in the publicity trough with the release of his new book, the Center for Individual Freedom said today.

"Mr. Spurlock distorted the facts and sensationalized his 30-day fast food 'diet' to sell his film," said Marshall Manson, the Center's Vice President of Public Affairs. "His new book embraces the same flawed and dishonest approach as the movie."

The Center also called on Mr. Spurlock to follow through on his promise and release his food diary. "We have called on Spurlock to release his food diary for more than a year now. He has consistently ignored these requests. This leads us to think that he has been dishonest. Especially since he was so adamant about keeping a diary and discussing it before his film was released in theaters last May," Manson said.

The book, just like the movie, is a hoax: instead of eating three meals per day and continuing even basic exercise, Mr. Spurlock gorged himself on 5,000 calories per day, spent enough on food to buy 38 hamburgers daily and stopped exercising, Manson observed. "It wasn't a diet, it was an eating binge. Every day for a month, Mr. Spurlock consumed two to three times more than he should have. Of course he gained weight and became unhealthy."

Just as Mr. Spurlock has peddled his movie as an educational tool for school children, he is now making noises about his book being used as a school text, according to reports. "This book is at best entertainment; it's not a teaching tool. And Morgan Spurlock is no role model. He is a shock entertainer, not an educator for our children," said Manson.

Furthermore, Mr. Spurlock's conclusions have been debunked by credible individuals who conducted their own 30-day diets and stayed true to the premise of eating three meals daily -- including choosing a variety of foods, eating a balanced diet, maintaining physical activity and taking personal responsibility for decisions.

Instead of promoting healthy habits, Mr. Spurlock's film and book endorse and graphically illustrate irresponsible behavior and lay the blame for that behavior at someone else's feet, Manson said. "It all leaves a bad taste in my mouth," he concluded.
