Christie's Beloved Sleuth Returns!; Agatha Christie's MARPLE
Series 1
Starring Geraldine McEwan in Lavish Productions With Star-Studded Casts
WASHINGTON, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Acorn Media is proud to announce the May 24, 2005, release of Agatha Christie's Marple, Series 1. This highly anticipated new British mystery series stars Geraldine McEwan (The Magdalene Sisters, Mapp & Lucia) and makes its DVD debut on the heels of its national premiere on the PBS series Mystery! More than a decade after the last Miss Marple hung up her knitting needles, McEwan promises to put thoughts of previous Marples to rest in lavish productions of four favorite stories: The Murder at the Vicarage, A Murder Is Announced, The Body in the Library, and 4:50 From Paddington. Supporting casts include Joanna Lumley, Derek Jacobi, Tara Fitzgerald, Ian Richardson, Zoe Wannamaker, and Simon Callow. Acorn's 4- volume DVD boxed set has a running time of 376 minutes and a suggested retail price of $59.99. Pre-book date is April 26.
Special features on Agatha Christie's Marple, Series 1, include an hour- long behind-the-scenes featurette with cast and crew interviews, a history of Miss Marple adaptations, photo gallery, Agatha Christie bio, and cast filmographies.
McEwan, co-star of the 1990s drama Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, takes over the role of Marple from Joan Hickson, who died in 1998. "I feel I have been entrusted with a national treasure of whom I already feel both protective and extremely fond," says McEwan.
McEwan's Marple is depicted as more modern than her predecessors, an unshockable woman with many young friends. The new episodes, set in the 1950s, also reveal that Miss Marple had a romance in her past -- a love that's gone but not forgotten.
