Amicus Members Vote to Strike at BBC

LONDON, May 11/PRNewswire/ -- Amicus members at BBC have voted to take strike action at the BBC over
the corporation's plans to make devastating job cuts.

Amicus, the UK's largest private sector union has over 100 technical and
electrician members at the BBC who have voted 2 to 1 to strike.

Amicus members are angry at plans to slash 20% of the corporation's staff
and want a guarantee from managers that there will be no compulsory
redundancies and employment protection for staff whose jobs are outsourced.
Amicus say that their members' strike will have the largest impact on BBC
news coverage.

Amicus National Officer Mike Smallwood said:

"We will not accept cuts which devalue the BBC, short change
licence fee payers, and will worsen and undermine working conditions.

"20% job cuts mean 80% of the workforce will be required to do
100% of the work and that just is not acceptable.

"Our members do not want to strike to defend their jobs, but they have
been left with no alternative."

Amicus will be meeting with BECTU and the NUJ tomorrow to discuss dates
for coordinated strike action.
