Home prices have skyrocketed and the traditional six percent real estate commission is taking more money out of a home seller's pocket every year. It is no surprise that many are gravitating to alternative methods that allow home sellers to pay less in commissions and keep more of the equity in their homes.

Alternatives include discounters that offer a reduced commission, but sellers should establish if services are reduced along with the commission. Then there's the For Sale By Owner or FSBO option -- working without the assistance of a real estate broker and keeping 100 percent of the home equity. However, be aware, of 100 FSBOs, only 10 percent will actually sell. The middle ground between the traditional six percent commission and the For Sale By Owner appears to be the set-fee alternative. Sellers show their own homes and licensed real estate brokers do the rest.
