Mitel Announces Mitel Navigator - Creates New Class of Desktop Device

Mitel Navigator, a breakthrough product, intimately bonds with a PC to provide an integrated single, easy-to-use converged communications workstation

OTTAWA AND ORLANDO, Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Mitel(R), a leading provider of IP communications solutions, today announced Mitel Navigator, a breakthrough communications device that radically enhances the meaning of voice, video and data convergence on the desktop. With an entirely new form factor, Mitel Navigator delivers an unrivalled user experience and can be personally tailored for specific horizontal and vertical market applications.

"Convergence is a concept that can be applied not only to voice and data, but also to devices - particularly when it comes to the desktop communications device of the future," said Ronald Gruia, Program Leader for Enterprise Communications Solutions, Frost and Sullivan. "With the Mitel Navigator, Mitel is definitely pushing the innovation envelope towards a unique endpoint form factor. It is fully integrated with the Mitel Your Assistant(TM), delivering new features, SIP functionality and a powerful user interface."

As a telephony endpoint, the Mitel Navigator supports the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Mitel's own MiNet protocol. Mitel Navigator can also be integrally linked to the award winning Mitel Your Assistant, which is a highly intuitive suite of tools delivering presence, collaboration, video and instant messaging with knowledge, call and directory management that improves efficiency through a single interface. The Mitel Navigator can also be used with Microsoft's Live Communications server and Instanbul client to enhance the telephony-enabled desktop experience

"As part of the Microsoft Istanbul Technology Adoption Program, we are delighted that Mitel is contributing as a software partner and is exploring how converged technology can be addressed from the desktop", said Marc Sanders, senior product manager, Real-Time Collaboration Group, Microsoft Corp. "Mitel is a recognized innovator and the Mitel Navigator will bring new utility and usability to the market."

To simplify task navigation, nine programmable, self-labeling buttons are accessible from the Mitel Navigator or via the click of a mouse. These buttons invoke telephony features, PC applications or commands. One can be assigned for scrolling giving the user an ability to access up to 27 commands and tasks. The Mitel Navigator also supports PC speakers and headphones that can be used with the embedded full-duplex microphone and speakers for hands-free or conference calling. When the PC is being used to play music or other audio streams, Mitel Navigator normalizes the output using a phone-sensitive volume control in the event of an incoming or outgoing call.

The Mitel Navigator builds on Mitel's market leadership in creating highly intuitive devices and continues to prove the need for high functionality and ergonomically rich styling.

"The unveiling of Mitel Navigator at VoiceCon 2005 is further proof of Mitel's thought leadership in providing our customers with a superior desktop communications experience," said Don Smith, Chief Executive Officer, Mitel. "This is the first of a new communications category, fuelled by the tangible business benefits that IP telephony brings today, that will radically change the way we work in the future. Mitel Navigator is all about making sophisticated communications as simple as a phone call but as powerful as a PC."

The Mitel Navigator can be seen during VoiceCon 2005 at the Mitel Booth No. 501 and at the Microsoft Partner booth No. 513. The product will be available in Q3 2005.
