FOKUS Implements Push-to-Multimedia Application Based on Brooktrout's SnowShore Media Server

Media Server Utilized as Key Component of IMS Testbed at FOKUS

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Brooktrout Technology, Inc., a leading supplier of media processing and call control products, today announced Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS, a leading communications research institute based in Berlin, Germany, has chosen Brooktrout's SnowShore Media Server(TM) as a key component of their IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) testbed in Berlin. The testbed is being used to design and implement Next Generation Networks and multimedia services like Push-To-Multimedia over Cellular (PTMoC).

In a novel spin on Push-to-Talk technology, FOKUS has extended the concept beyond mobile handsets to include multimedia sessions between a range of different access points. In the future, FOKUS intends to add video capabilities ("Push to Multimedia") and the ability to obtain multimedia information delivered to the handset in real time ("Push to Service"). The Push-To-Multimedia application connects to Push-To-Multimedia client software developed by FOKUS that can be loaded onto java capable mobile handsets, wireless Internet handsets and personal computers.

"We evaluated a number of IP Media servers and selected Brooktrout's SnowShore Media Server for the Media Resource Function in our IMS because of the flexibility of the SIP interface and Brooktrout's adherence to open standards," said Karsten Knuettel, IMS Project Manager at FOKUS (http://www.fokus.fraunhofer.de/). "The IP Multimedia Subsystem is the heart of our Next Generation Network and Services initiatives and we view Brooktrout as a core provider of technology for multimedia affairs."

Brooktrout's SnowShore Media Server will act as the Media Resource Function (MRF), as defined in the IMS architecture by the 3GPP/3GPP2 and will manage voice and video media streams under the direction of FOKUS' application server. In addition, Brooktrout's TR2500(TM) universal media gateway platform provides the transcoding capabilities that help resolve issues of media incompatibility.

"FOKUS is a world-renowned center of excellence for communications research, with one of the leading facilities for 3G mobile technology development," said Peter Vescuso, vice president of market development for Brooktrout Technology. "Their facilities are second to none and we are proud that such a well-respected research lab chose Brooktrout's SnowShore Media Server for their testbed."

Brooktrout's SnowShore Media Server is an open, carrier class media processing resource that can support a broad range of applications, from basic messaging and multiparty calling to prepaid services and network announcements. Because it is an open software architecture and uses small- footprint, industry-standard server platforms and standards-based IP protocols, the SnowShore Media Server can leverage the ongoing evolution of network architectures and processor technology to deliver a flexible media processing solution for next-generation IP applications. A specific discussion of Brooktrout's SnowShore Media Server's role in the IMS architecture can be found on Brooktrout's website, available at http://www.brooktrout.com/papers/ims.cfm

The Brooktrout Technology TR2500(TM) is a high-density cPCI platform ideally suited for the deployment of high-availability systems based on advanced IP architectures. It supports channel densities from 4 E1/T1 to T3 in a single slot for highly scalable solutions, and its onboard support for industry standard IP protocols simplifies the design and implementation of next-generation distributed IP architectures.
