Director of Academy Award Winning Documentary Hosts Benefit in Cleveland Heights on March 3rd

Benefit for Kids with Cameras to Feature Born into Brothels Director Ross Kauffman

CLEVELAND, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The special benefit screening of the Academy Award winning film Born into Brothels will take place on Thursday, March 3, at 7 pm at the Cedar Lee Theatre in Cleveland Heights. Director Ross Kauffman will be present at the screening to answer questions about the film, which won an Oscar for Best Documentary at last night's 77th Academy Awards. Proceeds from the event benefit Kids with Cameras, a non-profit organization that sends exceptional photographers to communities around the world to lead workshops that emphasize artistic excellence, individualized attention, and encourage a holistic approach to art and education.

Born Into Brothels is an inspiring look at the journey of a group of extraordinary children in Calcutta's red light district. Directed by Ross Kauffman and New York-based photographer Zana Briski, the film portrays several unforgettable children who live in the red light district of Calcutta where their mothers work as prostitutes. Briski gives each of these youngsters a camera and teaches them how to take pictures, inspiring them to look at their world with new eyes. Working together, Kauffman and Briski capture how a bright and promising future becomes a possibility for children who previously had little or no future at all, and in the process, create a tribute to the resiliency of childhood and the restorative power of art. In addition to winning the Academy Award for Best Documentary, the film has won the Audience Award at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, and the Roxanne T. Mueller Audience Award at the Cleveland International Film Festival where it was featured last March.

The benefit event includes a reception with Mr. Kauffman featuring photos highlighting the children's work at Studio You, 2180 Lee Road, across from the Cedar Lee Theatre. Prints of the children's work from this multi-awarded documentary will be available for purchase. One hundred percent of the proceeds from print sales benefit the children's education and welfare.

Tickets are $25 for advance purchase by March 2 (tickets held at the door), and $30 day-of-show (limited availability). To order tickets and for more information, contact Mary Brown at 216-231-2721, or email maryb13@sbcglobal.net.
