VIVO Selects Motorola's Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC) Solution
VIVO Win in Brazil Builds Upon Motorola's International PoC Momentum
SAO PAULO, Brazil, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- VIVO, the largest mobile telephone carrier in South America with more than 25 million subscribers in Brazil, has selected Motorola Inc.'s (NYSE:MOT) end-to-end Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC) solution. Motorola was selected from a field of competitors after a three-month trial.
Including this deal with VIVO, Motorola has won contracts to offer CDMA2000 1X PoC solutions and PoC solutions in other technologies with 23 customers operating in 27 countries and territories -- 13 of which are in Latin America and the Caribbean.
VIVO has offered PoC service, known as VIVO DIRETO, on its nationwide CDMA2000 1X network since Sept. 2004.
Push-To-Talk over Cellular, a simple, convenient way to stay in touch, is gaining in popularity with subscribers around the world. With PoC, people can talk to one another or make a group call with members of their "buddy list." Instead of calling each recipient individually, a push of the key is all it takes to talk directly to an entire circle of friends, family or colleagues.
"We pride ourselves on offering the latest services and innovative applications for our customers, and believe VIVO DIRETO will significantly enhance our service offering to our customers in Brazil," said Luis Avellar, VIVO's vice president of marketing and innovation. "We have been impressed with the features of Motorola PoC solution and how easily it was integrated into our network for the trial."
"As a global leader in Push-To-Talk over Cellular, Motorola has created an end-to-end solution that delivers best-in-class service, functionality and support," said Jose Figueroa, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Networks Business for the Latin America and Caribbean region. "VIVO has endorsed our solution for these key attributes and its open- standards based technology, adding to its flexibility, scalability, and cost- efficiency now and in the future."
Motorola is a committed player in the industry-led effort to define technical standard specifications for PoC. Interoperability is an enabler for broad-based acceptance of a new service like PoC. Subscribers want to roam on compatible networks without having to worry if they will work together. Motorola is continuing to work with other industry leaders and has announced participation in joint interoperability testing to promote a final PoC standard for submission to Open Mobile Alliance (OMA).
Editor's Notes
Push-To-Talk over Cellular Defined
Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC) is similar to a walkie-talkie experience. It is a means of quick one-to-one or group communication. Instead of dialing a number to start a conversation, with one push of a button you simply go to a "buddy list" and select the person or a group list you want to contact. Push the button again, talk, and your voice is heard by the recipient.
Motorola and Interoperability
Motorola has made its standards-based PoC client software, which supports multiple technologies, available for license to third party handset manufacturers and software developers. This new PoC Device Interoperability Program, announced in February 2004, extends Motorola's commitment of making its interface specifications available to licensees, and will help speed the introduction of a wider choice of PoC handsets to market, benefiting both consumers and operators.
