World AIDS Day Chosen to Launch HIV/AIDS Radio Network, First All HIV/AIDS 'On Demand' Radio Network to Tackle AIDS

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldagon Resources and the Affiliate Nanocasting Network (ANN) announced today the launch of the HIV/AIDS Radio Network -- the first "on demand" radio network dedicated to airing the voices of HIV and AIDS from around the world.

The Network's pilot program, "HIV and Me Talk Radio," presents a 13-part series on Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS in recognition of this year's World AIDS Day theme. The program spanned the globe to speak with leading organizations, activists, policy makers, researchers and, most importantly, women living with HIV and AIDS. Initial guests include Deputy Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Dr. Kathleen Cravero; President George Bush's AIDS Czar, Ambassador Randall Tobias; Executive Director of the National Association of People With AIDS (NAPWA), Terje Anderson, along with guests from the World Health Organization, SIECUS and amfAR, the AIDS organization founded by Elizabeth Taylor. The highlight of the series is two rare and insightful interviews with women living with HIV.

Collectively, the pilot series presents a wide panorama of the issues facing women and girls with regards to this pervasive disease, as well as how these issues are being dealt with -- both at a policy level and a personal one.

"Some of the findings were quite surprising," said Aldagon Resources Timothy Critzer, host and co-creator of the program. "Most guests supported the idea of focusing this year's events on women and girls, but at least one thought it was a poor idea, as it fragmented the attention needed for the whole effort. Perhaps most significant is one common chord struck by almost everyone to whom we talked. It was as if they were reading from the same talking points -- men and women from the grass roots to the oval office all bellowing the same tune: 'We need better communication.' This was eye opening," said Critzer.

Perhaps Dr. Rowena Johnston of amfAR summed it up best on the program when she said, "HIV is one of those diseases that involves everything your mother told you does not belong in polite conversation: sex, religion, drugs, politics; and these are not easily surmountable problems. Every region of the world has its own views and its own cultures and taboos that really don't serve us very well in trying to treat this as a disease that humans are suffering from and that we are trying to deal with as best we can."
