"Cheryl is an outstanding leader whose talent and energy are hallmarks of her distinguished, 21-year newspaper career," said Gary Pruitt, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of McClatchy. Dell, 45, has held a variety of newspaper management positions in California, Texas and Washington over her career. She joined McClatchy in 1997 as advertising director of The Modesto Bee. She moved to The Fresno Bee in 1999 as vice president of sales and marketing until her appointment in 2000 as publisher of the Tri-City Herald. Dell is a native of Modesto, Calif., and a graduate of California State University, Sacramento, with a degree in communications.

"The News Tribune has long been recognized as one of the Northwest's leading newspapers, committed to South Sound readers and the communities it serves," said Dell. "I look forward to working with the talented staff and becoming an active part of the community."

Dell has been active in the community in southeastern Washington. She served on the board of directors for a number of local organizations, including United Way, Community Roundtable, the Mid-Columbia Reading Foundation, Tri-Cities Visitor & Convention Bureau and Junior Achievement. She also serves on the board for the Allied Daily Newspaper Association.

She is married to Brad Dell, executive director of the Washington State Children's Reading Foundation.
