Samsung Canada commits aid to help Fort McMurray residents rebuild

Donation includes funds for Canadian Red Cross ongoing relief efforts and Samsung school technology for Fort McMurray public schools

MISSISSAUGA, ON, July 8, 2016 /CNW/ - Today, Samsung Canada announced its support for the Fort McMurray relief efforts as Albertans continue to rebuild their community. This commitment, part of Samsung Canada's ongoing 'Hope for Children' philanthropic efforts that include education, health and community support in Canada, will include a financial donation to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal, as well as Samsung classroom technology for the Fort McMurray Public School District Board (FMPSDB).

"The teamwork, strength and spirit demonstrated by Fort McMurray residents since tragedy struck in May continues to be an inspiration for our entire team," said Mark Childs, Chief Brand Officer and Corporate Citizenship, Samsung Canada. "As the focus turns to rebuilding this vibrant community, we are proud to contribute to the Canadian Red Cross relief efforts, and look forward to working alongside the Fort McMurray Public School District Board to help residents get back on their feet as soon as possible and support students to reach their full potential."

Samsung Canada's donation will include $100,000 in the form of a financial donation to the Canadian Red Cross, with an additional $140,000 in Samsung classroom technology for Fort McMurray Public Schools whose educational resources were damaged by the May wildfire. Samsung's technology donation consists of 200 GALAXY View devices - an immersive smart-screen experience that will inspire student learning and engagement.

"This much needed technology will go a long way in supporting our in-school STEM programming camps and our afterschool technology and trade based academies. This generous technology gift from Samsung will help teachers continue to bring innovation into our classrooms", said Doug Nicholls, Superintendent of Fort McMurray Public School District. "This is a major step forward in this regard and in our rebuild process."

"Samsung's contribution to the Red Cross relief efforts in Alberta is deeply appreciated," says Conrad Sauvé, president and CEO, Canadian Red Cross. "Together, we are able to provide continued support to people who have just lost everything."
