Global Citizens Take Action with Dine Alone Records and SiriusXM at Canadian Music Week

TORONTO, May 4, 2016 /CNW/ - Global Citizen to partner with Dine Alone Records and SiriusXM for a special Canadian Music Week showcase highlighting two United Nations Global Goal initiatives on Friday, May 6 at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto at 8:00 p.m.

Complimenting an impressive line-up of Canadian talent including The Sheepdogs, Wintersleep, and Hannah Georgas, will be an on-stage moment in support of health and quality education with Member of Parliament, Adam Vaughan.

Concert-goers will be taking action to eradicate polio and to support education by emailing Prime Minister Trudeau, Foreign Minister Stéphane Dion and Minister of International Development Marie-Claude Bibeau to make a strong commitment towards education in emergencies at the upcoming World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, Turkey. Global Citizen works to engage citizens to take action in support of the Global Goals with the vision of ending extreme poverty by 2030, and will be promoting two important campaigns through the Showcase.

Further to those taking actions onsite at the showcase itself, Dine Alone has set aside two pairs of tickets to the sold out showcase in support of education and health. "Music can be a powerful agent of change. Dine Alone has seen incredible examples of this in our 10 years. It can be a social convener and reason for people to get together. We're excited to be working with Global Citizen to make this Showcase not only a display of great talent, but a moment for meaningful action," said Joey Carriere, Founder and President of Dine Alone Records.

Those who aren't able to gain entrance to the sold out show can still listen through SiriusXM's live broadcast on The Verge (ch. 173), available on Satellite and SiriusXM Streaming and On Demand through the SiriusXM app. "Global Citizen is an amplifier for social change and expands the number of people who can take action and participate to solve seemingly impossible issues. SiriusXM is excited to amplify through our media platforms," said Jeff Leake, Director, Music Programming, SiriusXM Canada.

"We've seen such a compassionate response across the country to the refugees who've come from Syria and other areas affected by conflict, but at the World Humanitarian Summit, Canada has an opportunity to significantly help those who are still displaced by providing them access to education. It's incredible to have such talented artist and our partners at Dine Alone Records and SiriusXM involved in growing the movement of Global Citizens especially here in Canada. Canadians have been great action takers especially when it relates to their own country" said Dominic Mishio, Canada Director, Global Citizen.

About Global Citizen
Global Citizen works in partnership with and supports some of the most effective organizations working to end extreme poverty. Committed to providing the most interesting stories, effective actions and powerful campaigns, Global Citizen aims to unlock the power of every individual to play his or her part in the movement to end extreme poverty in the next 15 years. We believe that when an organized, critical mass of individuals in society aspire to the values of Global Citizen, and when they are equipped to take meaningful action, we can change the policies and practices that contribute to keeping people in extreme poverty.

About Wintersleep
Wintersleep are key Canadian Global Citizen ambassadors who champion the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's (GPEI) efforts to see polio become the second disease in human history fully eradicated from the planet. "We were shocked to hear that a disease like polio still exists in some parts of the world when we have the knowledge and resources to eradicate it. Wintersleep is proud to add our voice in support of such an important issue. If we can eradicate a disease, then we can show what's possible when the world rallies behind a clear goal," said Loel Campbell & Paul Murphy of Wintersleep.

Wintersleep's Edmonton concert also included a key moment where Member of Parliament Randy Boissonnault took the stage with Global Citizen to hear directly from his Edmonton-Centre constituency their call to End Polio, making it a night of great music and meaningful action.

The band's efforts coincide with a grassroots push by Global Citizen, Canadian Rotarians UNICEF and Results Canada designed to raise awareness of the issue, applaud Canada for its support to date and urge the Trudeau Government to continue to fund the GPEI.
