Global Premiere Of New Action Film "Gun Crazy" Exposes Horrific Reality Of Gun Violence In America

States United to Prevent Gun Violence Launches #GunCrazy PSA to Juxtapose Our Cultural Obsession with Guns Against the Gruesome Truth of Gun Violence

NEW YORK, April 14, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today States United to Prevent Gun Violence (SUPGV), a national non-profit organization dedicated to making our communities safer, releases #GunCrazy, a PSA that reveals the disconnect between our culture's glorification of guns and the shocking consequences of real gun violence.

To create the PSA, SUPGV invited self-professed action movie lovers to a screening of Gun Crazy, billed as the latest big budget high-octane blockbuster. When the film rolled, the audience was shocked to see real footage of gun violence, including unintentional shootings, suicides, incidents of domestic violence and homicides. Hidden cameras filmed the stunned reactions which are captured in the powerful #GunCrazy PSA, available to view at GunCrazyPSA.com. The campaign's core message is clear: We need to change the way we look at guns - We would be crazy not to.

We are exposed to considerable gun violence in films, but society's obsession with guns runs deeper than entertainment. The percentage of Americans who have fallen for the myth that guns keep you safer has nearly doubled since 2000, reaching a record-high of 63 percent. In reality, owning a gun makes death in the home four times more likely than if you have no firearm, ultimately endangering families.

Following the screening audience reactions ranged from, "We over-glamourize guns," with the viewer stating how the experience showcased a disconnect between real gun violence and what we are enticed to view in entertainment, to "You have to be crazy to think that guns are somehow making us safer." Another audience member saw a larger national issue calling it a "wake-up call" for our nation on gun control.

"In 2015 alone, there were almost as many mass shootings as there were calendar days," says Julia Wyman, Executive Director of States United to Prevent Gun Violence. "Our goal with #GunCrazy is to showcase the need for society as a whole to re-sensitize themselves to the gruesome consequences of gun violence. We encourage people to watch and share this educational PSA featuring first-hand reactions to real footage. Help us continue to bring widespread awareness to this issue and reignite the dialogue about our national crisis."
